We are a group of educators, researchers and practitioners, committed to promoting human rights and social justice through efficient policy, program and process in Nepal. We have recognized the need of educated, competent and evidence informed human resources to work in all of these three tiers of Social Development. This understanding has inspired us to establish an organization Sutra Centre for Development Education and Research, Sutra Centre to create a platform to develop social interventions and equitable practices in sustainable development of Nepal. Sutra which means “formula “,in Nepalese language, serves as foundation to design solution of diverse social problems and contribute to Sustainable Self and Sustainable Societies.
In 2005, Nepal was at the peak of Moist Conflict. Violation and abuses by both government and moist were widespread in Nepal. There were thousands of death and thousands of missing people. Child soldiers, abandoned elders, widows, single parent families had come out to be added issues in society to the different social issues that were present earlier. The marginalized and deprived population was yet to be addressed with constructive social mechanism. Understanding the need of efficient human resources in to address these diverse need to promote social justice, a group of young people Dr. Bala Raju Nikku, Dr. Pranita Bhushan Udas, Ms. Pradipta Kadambari, Mr. Sanjay Kadambari, Late Ms. Komal magarati , decided to establish an organization which would dedicate itself to develop educated, competent and efficient human service workers who would have the learning through university curriculum, research and practice. Sutra Centre was registered as a nonprofit organization in 2005 in Social Welfare Council, Nepal.
To begin its first step towards its mission, the team decided to approach Purbanchal University to begin Social Work program in their University. Prof Mishra took the lead to approach Purbanachal University for developing Social Work program in Bachelor Level. The team also took a help of father P.T Augustine, then principal Saint Xavier College to collaborate in developing curriculum and conducting program of bachelor and master level. The team developed the first BSW and MSW program curriculum for Purbanchal University. Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management became the first educational venture of Sutra Centre. It was established in 2005 with BSW program. At the same time
MSW from PU came to Saint Xavier College. IN 2007, Sutra Centre got affiliation from Tribhuvan University for program of Bachelor of Arts in Social
Work and rural development and started Nepal College of Development Studies from Trubhuvan University. With these two colleges, the founding member established Nepal School of Social Work as think tank of Social Work development in Nepal.
In 2017, Sutra handed over Nepal College of Development Studies and Nepal School of Social Work to different group. Since then it has put its focus on Social Work program and determined to develop Kadambari Memorial College as centre of excellence of Social Work in Nepal. Currently, Sutra is working toward building competent Social Workers as actors of establishing just and equitable societies in Nepal and beyond. The executive committee is currently head by Ms Pradipta Kadambari . Sutra has been doing Social Projects, networking with international agencies and universities and supporting Kadambari Memorial College in development of its academic programs.
Sutra Centre has configured three pillars for its mission in establishing just societies with fair and good human relationship as means of sustainable human centric development. Education, Scientific approach and People are the three pillars mission of Sutra Centre.
1. Education :
1.1 Establishing University level higher educational institutions to provide equal opportunities to students of different communities and tiers of society through Social Work/ Social Sciences education and research.
1.2 Conducting educational activities on Social development and natural resource management to rural communities.
2. Research /Scientific Approaches
2.1 Conducting research on various social issues, disseminating and integrating the research finding in university level, local level and international level through workshop, seminar, conferences and recommendations.
2.2 Conducting scientific study and interventions as evaluation and monitoring, process documentation to gather knowledge on scientific process and procedures.
2.3 Collaborate with different stakeholders, international university and agencies to conduct collaborative research and collaborative action project.
