About Us Our History Our Mission

We are a group of educators, researchers and practitioners, committed to promoting human rights and social justice through efficient policy, program and process in Nepal.  We have recognized the need of educated, competent and evidence informed human resources to work in all of these three tiers of Social Development.  This understanding has inspired us to establish an organization Sutra Centre for Development Education and Research, Sutra Centre to create a platform to develop social interventions and equitable practices in sustainable development of Nepal.  Sutra which means “formula “,in Nepalese language, serves as foundation to design solution of  diverse social problems through education and research  and contribute to Sustainable Self and Sustainable Societies.

Context

Sutra centre was established in 2005 when Nepal is resting its decade long moist conflict and creating a new pathway to equitable, inclusive and fair social development as means of just societies. The post conflict situation had surfaced the in equability, deprivation and marginalization people of Nepal which emerged as spectrum of social problems and issues. The diverse social, economic and geographical structure highlighted the different and difficult context of solving the problems. It was clear that, there was need of scientific inquiry and scientific approaches to solve the problem. Realizing the importance of collective initiative to prepare educated human service resources and social scientist in the field of social sciences, a team of enthusiastic scholars came into a group to establish a nonprofit organization Sutra Centre. The founding team members were Dr. Bala Raju Nikku, Dr. Pranita Bhushan Udas Nikku, Ms. Pradipta Kadambari, Mr. Sanjay Kadambari, Mr. Joyson Jose, Mr. Ramesh Maskey,  Late Ms. Komal Magarati , Late Mrs Padma Kumari Kadambari and last but not the least the father figure of the initiative  Prof Mahendra Narayan Mishra. With the support from other family members and close friend Sutra Centre took its legal shape as mother organization of its social work higher education institute Kadambari Memorial College and continuing working as sutradhar “ the initiator” of Social Work Program of Purbanchal University in Kadambari Memorial College.

Our Mission

Sutra Centre has configured three approaches of its mission to reach to its vision of preparing efficient educated human resources as means to sustainable society and holistic development of people and planet.  Educational Approach, Scientific Approach and People Centric Approach are the three ways in which the momentum is created to reach to its vision.

  1. GYAN - Educational Approaches (blending formal  knowledge and informal knowledge  wisdom ) :
    • Establishing University level higher educational institutions to provide equal opportunities to students of different communities and tiers of society through Social Work/ Social Sciences education and research.
    • Conducting educational activities on Social development and natural resource management to rural communities.
    • Building capacity of schools in inclusive education, child friendly education and child protection as environment to quality and inclusive education.
    • Innovating model and approaches of experiential education and university/ school community engagement as attributes of quality education for personal and community development.
  1. BIGYAN- Scientific Approaches (Researching evidences and documenting local knowledge and practice )
    • Conducting research on various social issues, disseminating and integrating the research finding in university level, local level and international level through workshop, seminar, conferences and recommendations.
    • Conducting scientific study and interventions as evaluation and monitoring, process documentation to gather knowledge on scientific process and procedures.
    • Collaborate with different stakeholders, international university and agencies to conduct collaborative research and collaborative action project.
  1. People Centric Approach ( Promoting human relationship, human rights and human responsibility )
    • Development of ethical human resources for Just Social development.
    • Equal access to deprived students in its educational program.
    • Practice inclusion in all of its programs discouraging the differentiation due to caste, gender and poverty.
    • Promote human relationship, human rights and human responsibility for people and planet for meaningful livelihood for all.

Program

Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management

2005 A. D, Nepal was coming toward the end of its 10 years long moist conflict. This decade long armed struggle between the Maoists and the former government of Nepal impacted the lives of people living in all the different tiers of Nepal’s social structure. More than 14000 people were killed, 1700 were listed as missing. Single parent families, child orphan, abandoned elders, and traumatized families were the immediate issues to be addressed by Nepalese society and Nepal Government. However, the compounding political instability and transition to peace process lead thousands of men and women from both rural and urban Nepal to migrate for labor work in different countries posing another issue of family separation. Realizing the need of professional workers to solve the problems of  different individuals, groups and communities, Sutra Centre form this  educational institute to nurture young students with university level Social Work program  and  make  them ready to be professional social workers. The group presented a proposal to Purbanchal University to develop Social Work program for bachelor and master level program. The team prepared curriculum of BSW and MSW for Purbanchal University and started BSW program from 2005 with the goal to prepare professional social workers who will provide quality service to oppressed and marginalized sector of society and improve their socioeconomic condition in contributing to sustainable social development.

During its 14 years educational journey, Kadambari has been thriving as vibrant and proactive Social Work College in Nepal. Shaped by its own program, the colleges is now focused on delivering and also developing quality Social Work educational program and aspire to establish as a national institute of excellence in Social Work in Nepal. A dedicated and motivated team of young faculty members and management is a working team of Kadambari at present ,with their passion and professionalism is driving the college toward its vision.

2005, Nepal was at the peak of Moist Conflict. Violation and abuses by both government and moist were widespread in Nepal. There were thousands of death and thousands of missing people. Child soldiers, abandoned elders, widows, single parent families had come out to be added issues in society to the different social issues that were present earlier. The marginalized and deprived population was yet to be addressed with constructive social mechanism. Understanding the need of efficient human resources in to address these diverse need to promote social justice, a group of young people Dr. Bala Raju Nikku, Dr. Pranita Bhushan Udas, Ms. Pradipta Kadambari, Mr. Sanjay Kadambari, Late Ms. Komal magarati ,  decided to establish an organization which would dedicate itself to develop educated, competent and efficient human service workers who would have the learning through university curriculum, research and practice. Sutra Centre was registered as a nonprofit organization in 2005 in Social Welfare Council, Nepal.

To begin its first step towards its mission, the team decided to approach Purbanchal University to begin Social Work program in their University.  Prof Mishra took the lead to approach Purbanachal University for developing Social Work program in Bachelor Level.  The team also took a help of father P.T Augustine, then principal Saint Xavier College to collaborate in developing curriculum and conducting program of bachelor and master level.  The team developed the first BSW and MSW program curriculum for Purbanchal University.  Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management became the first educational venture of Sutra Centre. It was established in 2005 with BSW program. At the same time MSW from PU came to Saint Xavier College.

IN 2007, Sutra Centre got affiliation from Tribhuvan University for program of Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and rural development and started Nepal College of Development Studies from Trubhuvan University. With these two colleges, the founding member established Nepal School of Social Work as think tank of Social Work development in Nepal.

In 2017, Sutra handed over Nepal College of Development Studies and Nepal School of Social Work to different group. Since then it has put its focus on Social Work program and determined to develop Kadambari Memorial College as centre of excellence of Social Work in Nepal.

Currently, Sutra is working toward building competent Social Workers as actors of establishing just and equitable societies in Nepal and beyond. Sutra has been doing Social Projects, networking with international agencies and universities and supporting Kadambari Memorial College in development of its academic programs.
